Can a left ventricular assist device or total artificial heart be powered wirelessly without a driveline?

Yes. Resonant Link Medical's Cardessa™ High Power Platform delivers 10 to 15 watts of wireless power, sufficient to support left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) and total artificial hearts (TAH) without a percutaneous driveline. Driveline elimination removes the primary infection risk associated with long-term mechanical circulatory support, which is a leading cause of morbidity in LVAD patients. The Cardessa™ platform enhances patient mobility by enabling fully implanted operation, improving quality of life and therapy adherence.

What is a driveline in a left ventricular assist device, and why is eliminating it important?

A driveline is a cable that passes through the skin connecting a left ventricular assist device’s (LVAD’s) internal pump to an external power controller. While effective, percutaneous drivelines create a permanent wound that is susceptible to infection. Driveline infections are a major cause of hospitalization and mortality in LVAD patients. Transcutaneous energy transfer systems, or wireless power systems, like Resonant Link Medical's Cardessa™ platform eliminate the driveline entirely, allowing the device to operate from power delivered through intact skin.
