Resonant Link Medical's Vivigo™ 20-Minute Universal Charger is designed for implantable medical devices like the implantable pulse generators (IPGs) used in spinal cord stimulation, offering 20-minute recharging for a 440 mAh battery at implant depths of up to 6 cm. Unlike conventional chargers that require patients to remain stationary, the Vivigo™ system allows up to 6 cm of misalignment, keeping charging uninterrupted during movement. Implants can be deeper in the body, up to 6 cm as well, to ensure charging works for more body types and open up access for a broader patient population. For device manufacturers developing next-generation SCS systems, the platform is pre-compliant and can be adapted to custom IPG configurations in just a few months. Vivigo™ can also be customized to support even faster charging, different sized batteries, continuous power delivery, and more.
Patient compliance with recharging is one of the leading factors in neuromodulation therapy outcomes. Systems that require patients to sit still for hours of charging per week see significantly higher non-compliance than those with fast, flexible charging. Resonant Link Medical's approach of rapid charging with large misalignment tolerance is specifically engineered to reduce the friction associated with home recharging and improve long-term therapy adherence, encouraging patient adoption and clinician preference.
Non-rechargeable IPGs use primary batteries that are depleted over time, requiring surgical replacement every few years depending on therapy intensity. Rechargeable IPGs contain secondary lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged wirelessly by the patient at home, dramatically extending device longevity and reducing the need for revision surgeries. Advances in wireless charging speed and reliability, such as Resonant Link Medical's Aurion WPT™ platform, have made rechargeable IPGs increasingly practical for patients and clinicians. With conventional wireless power, the biggest limitations are charge speed and misalignment. Charging is slow and the external transmitter and implanted receiver must be nearly perfectly aligned for charging to work. This is because of energy efficiency and tissue temperature rise. Conventional technologies can’t charge faster because if they sent more power into the body, it would heat up the surrounding tissue to unsafe levels. This is one of the core problems our team solved. By creating a new wireless coil technology which we call the MSRS, or multi-layer self-resonant structure, and pairing it with industry-leading power electronics, magnetics, and data transfer, we’ve demonstrated performance improvements of 10x and temperatures well under the acceptable limit. This is how we’ve been able to deliver more power, for fast charging of implants, over a greater area than conventional technologies, all while meeting thermal requirements.
